Dog Breeds that are Most Comfortable to Travel With
Not every dog breed can handle the stress of traveling whether by land, sea or air. Dog owners, therefore, need to know about this to avoid causing health and behavioral problems to their favorite pet. In short, be considerate about your dog’s condition all the time because just like humans, they can also suffer from anxiety when they’re not comfortable traveling even with your company.
Airline companies are most particular about the dog breeds that they allow on their flights. Normally, they do not allow pug-nosed dogs such as the spaniels and certain other breeds in the cargo area as they can be prone to suffocation and heat shock.
Dogs eight weeks old and below are also prohibited to travel on commercial flights. In addition, aggressive types of canines and those that are easily agitated or show destructive behavior can experience problems as well during travel and are often not allowed on flights.
Smaller dogs are ideal to bring along when traveling as they require the use of small-sized carriers which don’t need much space. On commercial flights, they can be allowed in the cabin area if they fit under the seat. Airlines usually allow them to be placed in front of the owner below the seat. Small breeds that are easy to travel include the Toy Poodle, Shih Tzu, Maltese and Tibetan Terrier.
On the other hand, there are certain large dog breeds that may not be allowed on planes due to the huge size of carriers they use. These include the Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane and St. Bernard.
Traveling from one place to another can be stressful to a dog. But there are canine breeds that can adjust well to any environment. These types are normally emotionally stable and have a calm disposition. Breeds that show this kind of behavior include the Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Border Terrier, Clumber Spaniel, English Bulldog, English Setter, Flat-coated Retriever, Great Dan, Great Pyreenees, Mastiff and the Newfoundland.
There are also dogs that can be comfortable in an environment with lots of people. These are the people-friendly and sociable canines. Unlike the aggressive type that can react violently when meeting new people, this kind of dog can tolerate big groups of people. Breeds that fall in this category are the American and English Fox Terrier, Beagle, Bichon Frise, Border Terrier, Clumber and the English Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, Japanese Spaniel and the Newfoundland.
Other types of dogs that can travel well are those that have been properly trained. Obedient canines follow what their owners tell them to do. These are the intelligent types that can accompany their owners wherever they may travel. Breeds that become more obedient than the others include the Collie, Doberman Pinscher, Standard or Miniature Poodle, Bichon Frise, Shetland Sheepdog, Chihuahua, Papillon and Japanese Spaniel.
If you’re a frequent traveler who plans to get a dog as companion, you should consider these tips. Selecting the right breed will ensure an enjoyable trip every time with your beloved pet. Dogs are indeed great companions and they can always reciprocate the care and affection you show them.
